For Lieutenant Samantha 'Sammy' Yates, leaving the Marines wasn't an option she ever wanted. Forced out of the service because of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, she tries to move on with her life-- putting up a good facade to those who don't know her very well. Alone, however; she is plagued with battle scars she can't shake even two years after her tour. When successful psychiatrist, Sara Lawson, decided to move back to the only place she ever felt safe, the last thing she had on her mind was falling in love. Deciding to renovate the home she inherited from her grandmother, she crosses paths with Sammy, who is now working as a contractor. Sara spots something kindred in the woman's hardened, but kind blue eyes. Each hiding their own secrets in the small Florida town, they both realize that the walls they had spent years perfecting have started to crack around one another. As they slowly build a friendship, can they keep each other safe from the danger that is speeding towards them? This 2nd edition of the best-selling novel, After the Dawn, has been revised and contains the bonus story, "Dawn of Christmas."

The men and women who volunteer to our armed forces are truly to be admired. The story about a wounded soldier returning from duty is always a welcome theme to this genre.

However, there were so many inconsistencies, this reader became frustrated almost immediately. The most notable was Sara, the psychiatrist. Sara was so unbelievable to this profession, it was difficult to take the plot seriously. On the medical food chain, a psychiatrist is probably comparable to a surgeon but Sara is always referred to as Ms. and never as Dr. Lawson. She is lacking of any medical knowledge though an MD, defers to a retired military nurse, appears at a loss in a hospital environment (granted it was a VA hospital) though she completed her residency in one, and informs Sammy she is planning to open her private practice at her home? What psychiatrist in their right mind would allow patients to know where they live, adolescents can be as violent as adults. This issue could have been easily remedied by making Sara a psychologist, which ironically, on one occasion she is referred to as such.

The overuse of "tall woman" and "short woman" was just annoying.

There were many other inconsistencies with military protocol and the medical malpractice system as well.

The characters were so unrealistic it was difficult to give the subject matter the consideration it deserved.

Wow what an amazing story! Beautifully written an exciting tale of romance, love and danger all rolled into one! Just fantastic
The story of two women dealing with two very different yet difficult pasts has moved me. I am an Iraq Veteran, a former Marine, and current Soldier and have found this author's ability to create a fictional world full of real hardships strikingly uplifting. Thank you for this story. Those words don't amount to the emotion you have been able to capture in the pages of this book, but I strongly recommend any reader to give this book a study.

Between Sammy's struggles as a battle scarred Marine, and Sara's repressed emotion from an abusive relationship, the two characters fight for the light of goodness they once knew. Nothing takes away from the message portrayed in the heart of the book. Thank you again for writing such an amazing story.
An amazing story of great loss and love found! An ex Marine Sammy who was injured in Iraq and now works as a contractor meets a psych. Sara, who both have issues with trust and their pasts try and help each other. As they get to know each other things get interesting as Sara's ex comes back into the picture to cause problems. What with Sammy's PTSD issues and Sara's ex issues the story gets very intense and all H... breaks loose! A very good book and one that I would recommend to anyone.
I have just put this book down and I really enjoyed it!

Whilst this is a first book and the writer is still getting a feel for the written language (sometimes it is hard to decipher if you are reading in the first or the third person) I think that Stephanie has done a great job of writing a really in depth and obviously well studied story. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and the journey that I was taken on as a reader and I must admit that I was totally floored with the twist at the end.

For those of you out there looking for a romance novel of the lesbian nature, I would highly recommend this book but if you are looking for erotica, you will not find it here.
What an awesome story, very touching! I actually read it months ago, but decided to re-read it. I love the strength and integrity of both Sammy's and Sara's characters. I think if Sammy was real, I'd fall for her myself. My guess is, there are many veterans (male & female) dealing and coping with the aftermath of war, and I hope each find their Sara!!!

Being a Veteran myself (Ret A.F.), I am able to relate to Sammy on one level. I retired prior to 9/11, and "Don't Ask - Don't Tell" was only in effect the last few years of my career, so I had to endure the facades and charades that were so common in order to avoid the "Accusations" and "Witch Hunts" that could have derailed a career.
WOW, what a story and you two ladies did a BANG UP job telling it. I love your character Mary! I love the way you had your characters express them selves.......and above all.......I loved the fact that they did not him and haw halfway through the book before expressing their feelings about a subject to each other......you were soooooooooo fresh is your delivery. PLEASE, please give us more of these wonderful stories! You have SUCH WONDERFUL TALENT. Thank you for sharing it with us! Stephanie and Grace, together you ROCK!! I loved THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY but I more than loved AFTER THE DAWN.......now, please hurry and get CHANGING TIDES available so I can read it! Bless you both!
I can't believe I didnt rate or review this book. I think I orginally read it a couple of years ago and just reread it every few months for certain scenes and such. This isna great read and enjoyable. It deals with some hard topics such as PTSD, abuse, and violence. The story was really well written and the characters were great too. A solid 4.5* for this one, why not a solid 5 honestly i just wanna be difficult but i did love it!
